That's Ok, but I still liked the "typical" Dick Francis guy----strong, stubborn, capable, trustworthy, comforting, kind, loyal, quiet-----it was funny, but at the END of this novel, Miles finally almost turns into that guy! Whether it is an Uncle whose family farm rightfully belongs to him but Miles is salty because he thinks he is entitled to half as a partial heir. Things look bright in his career when finally his feelings of loneliness, depression, inconsistent riding ability, and growing self-loathing along with nightmares and anxiety attacks catch up with him, complicated by consuming alcohol to cope and the bodily stress of trying to maintain riding weight. The knowledge shared about the racing world, took me back to the days of listening to my granddad talking about the hos' racing he would avidly watch.

Barely any mystery, way too much alcoholism, some insta-love with the MC and his nurse, and then the worst part: the chapters kept flipping back and forth between the past and the present - but, with NO WARNING WHATSOEVER.Readers who are only looking for a traditional Francis horse-thriller may be a bit disappointed, but those who are willing to appreciate something a little different will be quite happy with Iced. Both triumph and disaster are ever present, but those imposters are ultimately dwarfed by exploitation and an addiction which see a promising career in ruins almost before it began. It seemed as he flew down the ice chute that he was close to a death wish, and his lack of enthusiasm for anything else was depressing. It contains a number of flashbacks that talk about his past and the things that made him the man he is now. When once again the story was going back to his early career I was finished with the tedious and minutely detailed descriptions of the sport.

So IMHO, it's another one well done - maybe more so because it isn't just another formulaic entry into a series. If you want shallow, one-note characters and a plot that is driven by the author’s holiday travels, then this is the work for you. Add to that the adrenalin-producing excitement of the Cresta Run, and the novel has all the ingredients for an action-packed rollercoaster ride of emotion and skulduggery. She spends a few hours talking with him on the phone and a half a day touring her hometown and that is enough for her to change her life. It's full of beautiful scenery, set in the middle of the winter and would make a nice read for beating the heat.Iced” features the past and present life of former steeplechase jockey Miles Pussett and his mental health problems and the various ways they developed and his attempts to deal with them before receiving professional help.
