Finally, on August 6, 2013, the Hulu application became available in Japan and on October 17, 2013, the Hulu Plus application was launched in North America, along with a one-week free trial. The systems were released in Japan on October 11, 2014, in Australia and New Zealand on November 21, 2014, [138] [139] and at retail in Europe and North America on February 13, 2015. On the Nintendo 3DS XL, this method yields a viewing size for DS games similar to their native sizes (due to the larger screen size of the XL), unlike on the original 3DS models, where the games appear to be shrunk. The XL variant does not allow use of these plates, instead having a couple of fixed metallic designs. times the size of the original Nintendo 3DS, while the screen of the XL variant is the same size as its predecessor.

The Nintendo 2DS (abbreviated to 2DS) was announced on August 28, 2013, as a new entry-level model of the Nintendo 3DS family. On April 28, 2012, the Nintendo 3DS launched in South Korea, in Cosmos Black, Misty Pink, and Cobalt Blue color variations.

It allows users to send hand-written/drawn messages to registered friends via SpotPass either or other users via StreetPass. Some models are produced with an IPS screen for the upper display, but some still retain the old TN screen for upper display. In March 2016, Nintendo began to release SNES titles on Virtual Console for New 3DS; they support a "Perfect Pixel" mode, which allows the games to be played pillar boxed with square pixels rather than in their original 4:3 proportions. Personalised advertising may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of information under California and other state privacy laws, and you may have a right to opt out.

For all this, though, Nintendo still hasn't quite managed to address one of the biggest user issues with the 3DS: battery life. The New Nintendo 3DS was first announced during a Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation streamed on August 29, 2014. The Home Menu is a graphical user interface similar to the Nintendo DSi Menu and Wii U Menu for Nintendo 3DS systems. On September 20, 2012, the Nintendo 3DS XL launched in South Korea, in Silver + Black, Red + Black, and White color variations. An additional thirty games were announced for release during the system's "launch window", which includes the three months after the system's launch date. In Europe, the New Nintendo 3DS was available in black or white, and its XL variant in Metallic Black or Metallic Blue. Despite Nintendo stating the 3DS XL was not intended to replace the original Nintendo 3DS, the 3DS XL and the 2DS seem to have replaced it.

The first quarter of 2015 saw the release of the New Nintendo 3DS, part of the 3DS family and thus counted among these sales figures, in Europe and North America. Another attempt was made in preparation for a virtual navigation guide to be used on the Nintendo DS at Shigureden, an interactive museum in Japan.

Despite this, Nintendo continued to investigate the incorporation of 3D technology into later products. Nintendo has noted this and included a secondary control pad here which, whilst not in the traditional control stick design, offers all the control of one. This attachment for the original 3DS was a good idea in theory, but its jeans pocket-busting size and ugly, lopsided design left a lot to be desired.

North American retailer Target reported that the Nintendo 3DS XL was among its top-sellers during the Black Friday. Attendees were then allowed into a second room, containing further games to play (mainly augmented reality-based) and in-device videos. Whether Nintendo's audience is prepared to pay for a system which seems to offer as much evolution as a smartphone generation is yet to be seen. The system contains 128 MB of random-access memory (RAM) consisting of 128 MB of FCRAM developed by Fujitsu, with a peak bandwidth of 3.

And, of course, the larger screen of the XL makes for top visibility, particularly on games that have a lot of action happening in a small space.
