Sometimes I think that a lot of parenthood is like that morning, trying to create an impression that you know what you are doing and are in control. I read it because my friend recommended it to me and I’m glad she did because I did identify with various aspects of the main character. I love how she isn't afraid to lay it all bare and admit she's making it up as she goes along, like so many of do. This is quite simply the best book about motherhood I have ever read: touching, tender, honest and true.

Eleanor Mills in the Sunday Times Mother to five children, Clover Stroud has navigated family life across two decades, both losing and finding herself. The book is not always pretty, and sometimes its directness is shocking, but it is full of love and honesty.I both read and listened to Clover narrate the book herself which she does beautifully and probably brings it more to life. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. I don’t think it added to the book, it wasn’t what I was reading the book for, and I felt it would be fairly awful for her kids when one day they and their friends read it. My Wild and Sleepless Nights explores what it means to be a mother: the way that children and motherhood changes women - both strengthening and weakening a woman's sense of identity.

But the imperative of obliterating her own inner pain is more urgent to her than the imperative of giving time and attention to the children she already has. Reading this book felt like having the most honest and emotional discussion with one of my best friends. At the same time the book is in places hilariously funny and I laughed out loud many times, and at other times I felt tears coming as I read of her experiences and emotions. The motherhood she describes is the very antithesis of the sanitised, smiling vision we are sold in washing powder ads.

I loved reading about Clovers youngest children which took me back to the days of raising small children and readily related to the madness of teenager life and the sadness that they leave you, as they should.

Even as she’s bracingly direct about the frustrations of motherhood, Stroud also revels in the delights. I really liked the writing style but think it was spoilt a bit by the unnecessary sexual references.
