I was interested to see where Eli's story would lead to - 'born with a fondness for pretty things, keeping my fingernails clean, hair combed. There is a sense of detachment from the characters which does feel very English, however, and which steers clear of the melodrama we might associate from the American authors.

I found this novel to be engaging and heart-breaking and, in some ways, that makes it difficult for me to describe it in a review. When a giant sperm whale washes up on the local beach it tells Joe Gunner that death will follow him wherever he goes. Because of this, local residents think the fields are cursed and respond by acts of hooliganism towards the property. Isabel Costello ‘Seldom, outside the realms of gay royalty like Alan Hollinghurst, have I read a novel about gay people so well written. But, be as much as this story carried the potential to be something noteworthy - it galloped through my mind as quickly as this story unfolded. The river is a character in itself that Joe must contend with as it torments him with dark thoughts confirming his worst fears.

I can not pretend that I gave a very good response but what I tried to explain, very poorly I am sure, was that the day of the 'gay' novel that dealt with 'homosexuality' as something to be explained and justified to a straight audience was over. A destructive love affair with his best friend from school is picked up where he left off, but soon ends in tragedy that begins to unravel the last bit of normality Joe has.Ransom's short stories have appeared in many anthologies and journals including Queer Life, Queer Love amongst others. Jon Ransom was a mentee on the 2019 Escalator Talent Development scheme at the National Centre for Writing.
