There’s certainly still something to like here, even for modern and adult readers, and I think I’m probably going to re-read through the whole series, if only out of nostalgia. It was directed by Anthony Squire and stars Norman Bowler as Bill, Wilfrid Brambell as Uncle Jocelyn and Eleanor Summerfield as Aunt Polly.

Philip is perplexed by a strange disembodied voice – until he realizes it's coming from a parrot in the tree! Original publisher s illustrated cloth covered boards, with a very slight lean, front lower corner slightly bumped. It is an adventure in the true sense of the word, building tension and excitement without resorting to the crude devices that rely on mayhem and destruction to achieve their ends. Like her brother, she has red hair, green eyes and freckles, and in several instances she is described as very pretty. Despite being an adventure story and not a family one, there is a fair bit of familial relationship building in the book, and through the series.

It’s all coming across as rather contrived and unlikely at this point, and nothing like the excitement of them running away from Mr Roy’s school. Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids.

Former owner's name to front paste-down and some light occasional foxing to o/w clean and sound contents. The stories show the four children off on their own, discovering and solving mysteries without much adult assistance. Join Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack as they go on all sorts of thrilling adventures, including River, Circus, Ship and many more. So I will start with an overview of the story as told in the film, noting particularly where it deviates from the book. But don’t worry, it’s not long before the children have found a nice man who gives them presents and plays with them and demands that they keep all this their little secret and never tell their parents (and/or neglectful relatives) about them. On the positive side, for modern adult reader the grimdarkness of the era both is hilarious and adds an element of genuine pathos. Enid Blyton is one of the world's best-selling children's authors with sales of her books in excess of 500 million copies. Condition: This book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear, discolouration, sticker on endpaper. The boys are still sent to sleep in the tower room overlooking the Isle of Gloom – or just Gloom as they refer to it – and Joe warns them off the island.

Pictorial wrapper is quite damaged, with front flap at one time being completely detached, but has been stuck back on with browning sticky tape. This is a lovely bright and clean copy of the first story in Enid Blyton s 8-volume Adventure Series , featuring Philip, Jack, Dinah, Lucy-Ann, and not forgetting Jack s pet parrot, Kiki, plus lashings of Ginger Beer! Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack escape their tutor for a lovely holiday in Cornwall, right by the sea.His sister Dinah finds this habit disgusting, and Philip loves to torment her by shoving a starfish in her face or letting his caterpillar crawl towards her. The house is owned by Phillip and Dinah's uncle Jocelyn (a focused historian) and overworked aunt Polly, who are helped by a handyman named Jo-Jo (Joe in some versions). I honestly didn’t know what I’d find, re-reading this novel for the first time in at least 15, if not 20 or more years. Go Down to the Sea has a worn DJ but is fragile, Four are 2nd to 4th impression, 2 are ninth impression and 1 is 13th impression. But when Micky, Philip's new monkey, breaks his birthday present, all the children are plunged into an exciting quest to find the lost treasure of the Andra with some ruthless villains hot on their trail.
