I also find the various testimonies about birth experiences shared in this book very inspiring because each person birthed their babies in different circumstances and they all had a positive birth experience with the help of hypnobirthing. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower women - and their birth partners - so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world.

As someone who has gone through labor once I wasn't as interested in the "what," but this did help to explain a lot of the "whys. I'm sure the breathing techniques will also come in handy but the sections of the book focusing on birth stories and reinforcing that you can say no to any intervention were less informative for me. Just as I would telling them to speak to my other half and not talk to me, who would surely just pass on what they're asking or saying anyway? I personally didn't necessarily do hypnobirthing in terms of visualization other than visualizing my baby and I working together, which also changed my life. As much as I agree and understand that "modern" birthing methods are not always the best, to be so heavily negative towards hospital births gave me no choice but to stop reading for my own mental wellbeing.

However, as promising as the initial birth biology 101 chapters were, Miller's perspective comes off overwhelmingly as anti-hospital propaganda.

Edit: although ended up not giving birth naturally, this book put me in the right mindset and I am forever thankful. The author gave an informative account of how to have a mindful pregnancy and be in-charge of your birth. I seen a video of this girl that did a home birth and she recommended this book for all new time moms or just anyone wanting to have a bit and slight ease of information during pregnancies. Breaking down in tears over a book because it made me feel like I was going to have the worst labour possible when it is meant to make your "birth better", shows a real lack of consideration for all types of labour and mothers-to-be. Information like birth shouldn't be painful in the majority of cases, that Hollywood depictions are dramatic and wrong can be good for mindset but there are parts where, although she doesn't recommend anything outright, strongly suggesting not to induce because the risk of stillborn going for 4/10000 to 6/10000 is still as small risk and it doesn't matter "how a baby makes it into the world as much as how you feel about bringing the baby into the world" presupposes a successful outcome that would result in more dead babies if applied as a policy to everyone giving birth.Anything that helps me identify tension and learn how to relax is (I imagine) going to be a good thing, so this book does a good job of that. HYPNOBIRTHING will change your mindset towards birth, so that you'll be able navigate your birth - and any twists and turns - with confidence, armed with practical tools that ensure you feel calm and in control throughout.

Siobhan Miller, mother of three boys, is an experienced hypnobirthing coach and founder of The Positive Birth Company, which aims to empower women and their birth partners to create positive birth experiences. Essentially, it’s a form of antenatal education, an approach to birth that is both evidence-based and logical. I liked the tips for birth partners, and the accepting and reassuring way the author describes and explains things.I certainly didn’t opt for a pool birth with no pain killers for my second labour as I knew what labour is like - and knew that wasn’t going to work for me. The author is very honest and candid in this book and helps you to see things from a more logical perspective when it comes to how your body is designed to give birth and the best way to do that. Third, to manage the environment, whether it's at home, birth centre, or hospital, to create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. I'm not sure the book gave them credit for that and it felt like it was giving the impression you'd have to put up a fight to get a positive experience of birth. This book has kind of a fancy/ weird title, but I think a better one (and I feel like the author would agree) would be: Just breathe!
